Learning project 2
Overall I am happy with how much I have learned in this project. I feel I have been really stretched to learn alot, and I feel happy that I have been able to learn enough to meet the brief. Coming from no animation experience I felt very stressed and worried that I would not be able to pass, but the necessity has helped me to take the steep learning curve, and now I feel like I am starting to get a beginning idea of what might be possible to do with director. I felt alot happier when I switched to trying to learn director, it felt much easier for me to understand quickly, whereas I felt pressured to learn about flash quickly, but I didn't feel like I understood it even after doing quite a few introductory tutorials.
I quite like the finished animation, and have added some interactivity. A loop at the beginning of the man at the bar moving with a roll over and if you click it begins. and at the end a loop that makes "one square meter" flash and blur, and if you click it plays again. I was worried about adding interactivity because I didn't know how to and I only added it at the last minute, and that was a nessesary part of the brief.
There are things I would have liked to improve if I had more time - I would have liked to add more movement of individual fragments - especially in the people. Also in the frames where the pannels are stretching to confine the girl into one square metre, I needed to rescan the drawing at a higher resolution for this purpose, because it becomes pixelated. But I didn't have the drawing with me at uni, and I didn't have time to get it before the deadline. I also would have maybe liked to add a bit more interactivity, but I didn't know how until the end, so I wasn't thinking about how to incorporate it more creatively.
I also would have liked to have a more sureal aspect to the "whole other world that doesn't exist anywhere else" and I would have liked to think of less trivial examples of the debates and tall tales, but I needed ideas quickly, and this could be refined further if I had more time. I wanted aspects of the stories and debates to make a sureal "whole other world" and I think I did this to a limited extent.
A mojor flaw in my piece is the hiss in the background of the sound piece. I would need to rerecord, because it is impossible to remove the noise. (In audacity when I remove the noise with a filter it makes bizare alien noises in the background of the places I remove noise from.) I had to increase the volume of the piece since I handed it in first, but this made the noise louder. The cumulative total of all the noise in all the different layers of the piece make it very bad. But I quite like the sound piece except for the noise. I would have liked to have sounds of actual tall tales or debates, but in the hours and hours of recording I did, I didn't get many concise things that I could use for this purpose.
I will take away from this project a bit of an idea about the possibilities of animation. I will take away an idea of further investigations and experiments that I would like to do in animation. I also take away from it more knowledge about art history and ideas about modern art movements.
